VA (Gruia, Ckb, Dudley Strangeways & Mortalyf, Ciprian Stan) – Sonet VA 01 [Sonet]
UK-based label Sonet returns with its fifth pressing in the form of a Various Artists compilation that features local artists Gruia and Ciprian Stan alongside Leftback Records frontmen Dudley Strangeways and Mortalyf as well as Leeds-based artist Ckb. The four tracks deliver a stripped-back minimal sound, each having its own individual identity, combining dark melodic and deep elements into a unique package. Early support comes from artists like Silat Beksi, Direkt, Herck, Swoy, Topper, Root, Vern, Vlad Arapasu and Sensek.
Side A opens with “How’s Annie” by Gruia, whose “Some Kind Of Heaven” EP saw the label launch back in 2019 with the goal of putting forward captivating underground music from the deeper end of the electronic music spectrum. The track reveals a steady-paced rhythm flavoured with twisted effects, glitched layers, heavily modulated vocal samples and intricate variations. Following, “Mentor” by Ckb switches gears for a more abstract minimalistic sound designed with quirky elements, darker tones and hypnotic arrangements.
On the flipside we first find Dudley Strangeways who teams up once again with Mortalyf for “Modal T”, dropping a thumping stripped-back groove just like you would expect. The prominent drumming patterns and the alluring background theme render this cut mysterious and perfect for the dancefloor. Closing the wax, “Forward Fold” by Ciprian Stan takes the tempo down a notch, revealing a dubby and introspective composition best fitted for the afterhours. A highly recommended 12″ right here for collectors and selectors alike!
