Gruia – Some Kind Of Heaven [Sonet]

The first pressing dispatched by the freshly founded record label Sonet features Romanian artist Catalin Postelnicu aka Gruia unleashing his creativity as a producer with “Some Kind Of Heaven” EP. The 12” packs three original cuts that will take you on a journey to a dystopic plane where eerie soundscapes merge with immersive rhythms. Early support comes from Casey Spillman, Maxim Swoy, Al Bradley, Alexi Delano, Carlo Gambino, Horatio, Chris Fortier and Eddie Richards.

Based in Bucharest and influenced by his traditional and contemporary musical background, Gruia started his activity back in 2006 and built a substantial discography with releases on labels like Viva Music, Trapez, Clarisse, Degree Records, Natural Rhythm and Circus Recordings. He performed as a resident in some of the most important venues on the island of Ibiza, drawing inspiration and experience with each set, while also being a guest on Ibiza Global Radio and Ibiza Sonica.

Determined to leave a particular mark in the local and international scene, Gruia now hosts the IN:Tension live radio show on Radio Deea while constantly developing on his own sounds. This EP sure stands as an argument for his versatility and dedication. Let’s turn the volume up and dive in.

Side A is reserved for “Some Kind Of Heaven”, a steaming composition designed with a hypnotic balance between the deep percussion, the grouching bassline and the ever-evolving background themes. Heavy modulated voices also come into play, adding even more intensity to the whole. Naming the wax, this electric rollercoaster sure delivers the vibes, exploring the deeper aspects of minimal music.

On Side B we first find “It’s Awake”, a playful and melodic track infused with numerous variations and elements, from filtered synth leads, short bursts of solid sub-bass layers to elegantly distorted vocal samples. All blend into an energetic stream that is complimented with style by the closing cut, “Tempus Fugit”. Here, the focus is maintained on subtle reverberations and secondary layers, as well as on the steady-paced drumming sequence. A great piece to conclude this first collection of tracks coming from Sonet.
