Vern – Clarobscur [Octophonic]
Octophonic returns with its second pressing, an amazing four-tracker titled “Clarobscur” signed by local DJ and producer Vern. Managed by Serbian artist Stoilku, the imprint was recently founded and delivered its first release in January with Priku at the controls. More materials will be published in time for sure, as the music already enjoys support from important names in the international scene.
Catalin Chifan aka Vern is hailing from Constanta, the largest port-city at the Romanian shores of the Black Sea. Here he made his first contact with electronic music almost ten years ago and since that moment he continuously worked on improving his skills as a selector and producer. His distinct sound incorporates elements from progressive techno, deep grooves and minimalistic rhythms, all elegantly intertwined in order to create immersive journeys. Aside from several independent works made available through Bandcamp, among the imprints he worked with we find Rowle, Lokomotiv, Joule Imprint and Re.Face Limited.
Side A opens with the title track “Clarobscur”, a driving piece designed with warm textures and a rolling drumming pattern that create a spacious atmosphere, perfect for the afterhours. Following, “Delight” provides a more classic approach to house music, being flavoured with minimalistic percussive arrangements and ever-evolving complementary soundscapes.
On Side B we first find “Epilog”, a pumping electric cut built with numerous melodic variations and vast breakdowns, all set to spin into a hypnotic ride at around 125 BPM. “Trivial” closes the wax with a solid progressive sound infused with bright background pads, subtle reverberating effects and chilled tension-building moments. The wax stands as yet another solid argument for the young producer’s unique vision on modern electronic music. A must-have right here!
