Priku – OCTO001 [Octophonic]
The first pressing brought forward by the freshly established record label Octophonic is delivered by Priku, well-known for his intense activity in the international electronic dance music scene, as well as for his work as a publisher at Motif Records and Atipic. Titled OCTO001, the 12” features four mind-bending tracks carefully crafted with engaging minimalistic sounds that will surely be heard on dancefloors around the world very soon. The vinyl-only imprint is owned and managed by Stoilku who also runs the digital Black Magic Groove affair.
Adrian Niculae aka Priku had a very productive year, with releases on Ruere Records, Rora, WYS! Recordings, Bplr Records, Berg Audio and performances in Romania, Mexico, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Turkey and Belgium, amongst other countries as well. His distinct sound undeniably contributed to the development of the Romanian minimal style since his first releases came out around 2010, while his collaboration with the local Sunrise Agency propelled him even further. Nowadays, he remains passionate about what he’s doing and continues to deliver amazing music to the people. Let’s explore in more detail his latest material.
Side A opens with “Al Șaselea Synth”, a very seductive and dynamic groove designed with steady-paced percussive elements, numerous complimentary effects and soothing background textures. From time to time you can also hear delayed vocals coming in and out of focus, adding even more flavour to the whole journey. Following, there’s the heavily syncopated rhythm of “Kinder Kraft”, a piece built around a twisted drumming sequence and grainy layers.
On Side B we first find “La Cafea”, a spacious and relaxed composition infused with subtle glitched micropatterns and mellow piano keys. The introspective feeling that we sense here is strongly related to the track’s title and highlights that specific moment in the morning when drinking coffee and thinking about what’s going to happen during the day suddenly changes into daydreaming. Closing the wax, “Morning Job” delivers a comforting sound that incorporates serene jazzy swings, elegantly hidden behind bright piano notes and finger snaps. A must-have for any vinyl collector and selector right here!
