Krif, Charbonnier – Rep Episode EP (w. Nu Zau & Cristi Cons remixes) [Lilas Records]
British imprint Lilas Records returns with the 5th vinyl-only instalment, showcasing two fresh and steaming cuts from label heads Krif and Charbonnier alongside local artists Nu Zau and Cristi Cons on remix duties. Titled “Rep Episode EP”, the 12″ delivers an amazing combination of minimal techno and microhouse perfect for both peak time moments as well as the afterhours at any party while adding extra spice to the label’s catalogue which so far features amazing works signed by Kirik, Olivian Nour, Swoy, Miroloja and Daniel Broesecke.
Well-known for their residencies at Into The Woods London, Sofiane Krif and Tarek Charbonnier always deliver top-notch DJ sets for the people while sharing the decks with established artists from all over the world. Slowly but carefully, they gain momentum with their own productions as well, always finding studio time to play, explore and record new gimmicks. For this release, they invite Nu Zau and Cristi Cons to complete the record with their unique styles, making this one a must-have for collectors, selectors and electronic music enthusiasts alike.
Side A opens with the title track “Rep Episode”, a solid stripped-down minimal cut flavoured with inspiring vocal recordings, gritty synth stabs and a warm bass guitar that elegantly floats above the steady-paced percussion. The breakdowns are carefully placed to evidentiate the vocals and the effects. Following, Nu Zau‘s remix takes the original into a more dynamic atmosphere, adding trippy reverberations to the vocal samples, hypnotic pads and wobbling background chords.
On Side B we first find the original take on “Balguens”, laying out a driving rhythm powered by dark tones and effects, trippy textures and rumbling dissonant pads that match perfectly with a dimly lighted dancefloor. Cristi Cons‘ reinterpretation switches gears and delivers an uplifting sound designed with meandering pads, warm textures and spiralling psychedelic effects that smoothly combine with the uptempo drum patterns.
