VA (Ciphr, John Manhard, Riciar Ghir, Costa) – HMV06 [Honne Music]

The sixth instalment in Honne Music‘s vinyl catalogue brings forward four fresh tracks signed by Chicago-based duo Ciphr (Max Jacobson and Christian Thomas), San Diego gem producer John Manhard, Italian prodigy Riciar Ghir and label resident Costa. While the venture’s discography counts over 50 digital titles, the vinyl division (established in 2019) brings forward a Various Artists series that features established artists as well as up-and-coming talents from all over the world. Find out more about the previous releases HMV01, HMV02 and HMV04 from our EP Reviews column. You’ll find amazing tracks from the likes of Rowlanz, Birdsmakingmachine, Melodie, Dieru, Teluric, Iuly.B, Laboratori OTK, Steve O’Sullivan and RQZ.

Side A opens with Max and Christian’s “Dawn Sheri” a fast-paced groove designed with solid breakbeat drumming patterns, warm jazzy notes and a hypnotic saxophone melody in focus. The breakdowns create constant tension for the track to build upon itself and also transfer energy to A2, “Portal Pen”, which sees the American producer John Manhard delivering a mesmerising dancefloor tool flavoured with intense deep house movements. On the flipside Riciar Ghir drops a wobbling electro sound in the form of “Jsr”, taking the record even further into uncharted sound dimensions while the closing cut “Entre El Viento” by Costa brings forward a hypnotic minimal vibe powered by a syncopated rhythm, marking the artist’s debut on vinyl with style.
