Gruia – Din Izvor [Sonet]
After signing the first release of the British imprint Sonet back in 2019, local DJ and producer Gruia returns to the label with another amazing solo material titled “Din Izvor”. The EP delivers an introspective sonic journey, each track unfolding like a chapter with glimpses into the past, present and future of our collective experience. Early support arrives from artists like Swoy, Herck, Vern, Ckb, Suolo, userUNKNWN, Cipo and Massud Matin.
Coming from the new wave of Romanian electronic music, Gruia is a Bucharest-based artist mainly influenced by his traditional and contemporary musical background. Throughout time he collaborated with labels like Natural Rhythm, Viva Music, Circus Recordings, Aesthetic and The Pool House, always bringing forward solid productions deeply rooted in minimal techno and microhouse. This EP makes no exception.
Side A is reserved for the title track “Din Izvor”, a steady-paced composition that combines futuristic sounds with solemn atmospheres and subtle traditional motifs exploring humanity’s quest for both outer and inner understanding, as we simultaneously venture to the edges of space and the depths of the Self.
On the flipside we first find “Margelatu” unfolding in three distinct parts inspired by a vivid dream. The intricate arrangements here incorporate carefully crafted percussion and glitched effects, eerie background textures, spacious breakdowns and haunting choral melodies that intertwine with the sounds of nature, to symbolize a cinematic farewell to one’s origins and the past.
Closing the record, “Memories of a String” weaves a tense, nostalgic melody conjuring the evocative image of a bygone moment from a bustling mid-century Tokyo street, captured and perpetually replayed in a mesmerizing loop flavoured by dissonant guitar strings.
