Kirik & Alia Palant (w. Cojoc & Vern remixes) – High EP [PhonicHouse1 Records]
After the recent release of Anas M and Farid Odilbekov‘s collaborative material as well as Constratti‘s “Colourful EP” at the beginning of the year, Romanian imprint PhonicHouse1 Records returns to its vinyl-only series with another mesmerizing record signed by Kirik & Alia Palant titled “High EP”. The 12″ includes two steaming remixes from local artists Cojoc and Vern, who deliver a taste of their fingerprint sound just as always, completing this record with style. The sonic journey through the rhythms and textures here is perfectly set in order to create an immersive experience, no doubt.
Since 2020 Kirik and Alia Palant have released several singles and EPs while touring Eastern Europe and delivering delightful performances for the people. The collaboration between the two artists focuses on Alia’s vocals being combined with Kirik’s productions into a fresh melodic sound which incorporates different takes on minimal techno and microhouse with a subtle touch of breaks and progressive aspects.
Side A opens with the title track “High”, a steady-paced composition designed with breakbeat influences, alluring background textures, eerie pads and lush breakdowns that evidentiate Alia’s whispered lyrics. The journey explores the deeper dimensions of minimal, being mysterious and engaging at the same time.
Following, Cojoc drops an organic reinterpretation, switching to a four-to-the-floor rhythm set at 124 bpm, bringing the effects in front of most layers and rearranging the complementary elements while maintaining a focus on the vocals, making this version best-fitted either for warm-up or afterhours selections.
On the flipside we first find the other original cut “Mupropalim”, a twisted cut powered by swinging broken beats and solid basslines inspired by the British garage style of music. The arrangements here are constantly changing, laying out various background melodies that elegantly intertwine with the prominent drumming patterns into a hypnotic sonic affair.
Closing, Vern‘s remix switches gears to psychedelic dimensions, revealing a dreamy track designed with driving percussion, a solid pulsating bassline, warm pads and spacious breakdowns perfect for peak-time moments or laid-back afternoon sessions at any party.
