Kirik – Bbangbgbanf EP [Colors Of Crocus]
The present quarantine measures taken to stop the spreading of the novel coronavirus has hit the music industry pretty hard, but this doesn’t mean that producers and DJs have to panic. The online environment now seems the best option for music to be released, streamed and promoted while records can still be purchased. The release date for Kirik’s most recent EP will soon be announced so stay sharp!
Ukrainian label Crocus presents the third pressing in the Colors Of Crocus Canvas Series with label-head Kirik at the controls unleashing deep and solid minimalistic rhythms in the form of three fresh and original cuts. “Bbangbgbanf EP” also includes a remix coming from the Miami-based trio Imbue, well-known for their five records released through their eponymous imprint. The artwork is signed by Konstantin Tereshchenko, a very talented painter from Kherson, Ukraine.
Kirik is an important name on the international electronic music scene, being active for quite some time now and having a lot of experience under his belt. His sound is constantly progressing and he always strives to satisfy the crowd as a selector, spacing from deep to tech and minimal with powerful grooves. His productions have been published by labels like Chelsea Hotel Records, Mulen, Curtea Veche, Dilated Records, Elarum, Black/Tuesday and his own playgrounds Uzvar, Crocus, Memory Remains and Razom.
Side A opens with the twistedly named title track “Bbangbgbanf”, a steady paced dreamy rhythm characterised by a constant fluidity provided by warm guitar melodies, heavy modulated whispers and trippy effects. The build-ups offer vast atmospheric moments while the drumming has a subtle progressive influence which spices up the whole journey. Following, “Tears Of Lust” reveals one groovy pattern after another, spinning with an exotic vibe designed with electric harmonies, warping basslines and elegantly distorted guitar notes. The track slowly builds on itself, gaining momentum after a spacious moment which also triggers new layers of background effects and subtle micropatterns.
On Side B we first find “Goa”, an otherworldly composition that can easily make anyone fall into a vivid daydream where the music calls for a dance on a sunny beach by the ocean. The cut sublimely incorporates psychedelic influences as well as minimalistic flavours, with the leading synth arpeggio constantly providing a bright and engaging vibration, backed-up by a rolling bassline, strong percussive elements and floating chords. Closing, Imbue’s re-interpretation of the title track maintains the same energy while transforming into a more melodic piece, where the modulated guitar and the melodic bassline fall into focus. A must-have for any collector and selector!
