After launching early this year with Faster‘s “Nexam EP”, German record label twelve.to.zero returns with its second vinyl pressing in the form of “While You Sleep EP” signed by Crihan. The material delivers 3 slow-burning and hypnotic pieces of minimal dance music brimming with detail deeply rooted in the early years of organic microhouse. The imprint is a freshly established endeavour from black.round.twelve record store and distribution platform in Berlin.

Heading Mezin since 2017, Alin Crihan is widely known for his numerous performances and releases, with more than a decade of experience in underground electronic music under his belt. He made his official debut on vinyl in 2015 via Naural and Ultrastrech and smoothly followed up with inspiring collaborations with truelovesounds, Catren, More Than Music, Eliptic, Haze, UVAR, Elements. and Windmuhle, among others. Behind the decks, you can sometimes catch him playing in lineups that include Petre Inspirescu, Raresh or Rhadoo but also Sammy Dee, Valentino Kanzyani or Maayan Nidam in various venues worldwide.

“Everyone deals with their imagination in their own way. As an outline, this material is about dreams (the owner of the label gave me the idea and it also matched the tracks). The Visitor corresponds to those lucid dreams, where you wake up, can’t move and feel a presence near you, X Files stuff. Eh, that presence is called in this science of dreams, the visitor.”

Taking up Side A, “The Visitor” drops a low-slung and stripped-back rhythm elegantly complemented by eerie background textures and effects that give an immersive aspect to the whole composition. The ever-evolving synth atmospheres create a spooky feeling perfect for warming up dimly lighted dancefloors.

On Side B we first find “Lust”, continuing the journey with a driving, mysterious and mesmerizing sound bubbling with vocal samples, orchestral textures and a distinctly microhouse swing while “The Chase” closes the EP with a fresh vibe powered by odd drum arrangements and melodic sequences that take centre stage, flowing on top of rolling basslines and introspective piano chords, proving Alin’s innate talent for avant-garde minimal music.
