Crihan – Shadow Dances EP [Haze]

After the success of the first “White” pressing signed by Adjustment Bureau, featuring a remix from Federico Molinari, Russian record label Haze returns with the first chapter of its “Black” series, delivered by local DJ and producer Crihan. Titled “Shadow Dances EP”, the 12” provides four fresh tracks designed with dark undertones, abstract rhythms and twisted atmospheres. A one of a kind release right here!

It’s been long said that modern electronic music has yet to offer all of its possibilities and this EP stands as a strong argument for these words. Opening the door to his inner world as he shares these mind-bending original works, the artist once again demonstrates his mastery of the minimal sound and beyond. Alin Crihan is a long-time veteran of the scene, crafting his skills since 2004. He followed an ascending path, mixing at numerous parties and festivals in Romania and abroad while also dropping his productions with renowned labels. Amongst those, we notice Naural, Ultrastretch, More Than Music, Catren and Eliptic Records. In 2017 he founds his own playground, Mezin, where he so far dispatched two amazing EPs. Behind the decks, you can sometimes catch him playing in lineups that include Petre Inspirescu, Raresh, Rhadoo, Sammy Dee, Valentino Kanzyani and Maayan Nidam, to name only a few.

Side A opens with the deep and minimalistic sound of “Behind The Veil”, a syncopated rhythm that focuses on its atmospheric dimension, as all the elements seem to follow a mysterious sequence. The dark feeling of the cut is transferred to A2 “Under The Influence” while a more uplifting tempo takes over. The gloomy composition is infused with haunting patterns and effects, while the percussion offers a glitched and heavy modulated vibration.

On the flipside we first find “Over & Away”, a piece that goes fully experimental, revealing a hypnotic tribal beat flowing alongside twisted textures and build-ups. Closing the wax there’s “Hold”, a mesmerising soundscape that explores genres like IDM and ambient. The melodic touch brings rays of light over the whole release providing a relaxed and spacious ending.
