Alex Font – Dimension Latina EP [Acmé]
Alex Font returns to his main imprint Acmé with a double 12″ titled “Dimension Latina”, elegantly exploring the combination of minimal, microhouse and exotic Latin rhythms while collaborating with renowned musicians and producers from Cuba and Venezuela. On remix duties, we find DoubtingThomas, Guy From Downstairs, Vid and Dorothy’s Dream, so there’s no wonder this material is supported and played by Ricardo Villalobos.
Being a Latin music lover, Alex Font loves digging into the roots and essence of the afro-cuban genre, taking inspiration from various artists and transposing their vision into modern compositions that reach into the minimal or microhouse styles. His previous EP, “Los indisciplinados de la Salsa”, shared a common approach yet this time the artist goes deeper, revealing a truly alluring sound, infused with romantic and colourful arrangements.
Opening the EP, “Obatala” sees Alex collaborating once more with Musica Viva for a smooth steady-paced minimal groover that’s being infused with a driving bongo solo by Rai Enrique while DoubtingThomas transforms the original into a lively afterhours gem with his reinterpretation. Following, “La Musica Es Una Hermandad” drops a steaming uplifting sound perfect for the dancefloor and sends a hypnotic stream of vocals through the frequencies. In contrast, Vid‘s remix takes the track into a darker dimension, transposing the elements into a low-slung roller that matches the Romanian artist’s fingerprint sound. Dorothy’s Dream‘s chilled reinterpretation arrives as a bonus track focused on groovy broken beats, warm textures and spacious breakdowns.
The title track “Dimension Latina” unleashes an electrifying combination of rhythms and textures which includes vocal sampling and acoustic bass chords played by Abelito Sanabria, bongo and campana solos by Yoel Paez, as well as additional vocal improvisations coming from Oscar Ettedgui, making this cut a solid example of the limitless potential stored in mixing traditional music with modern electronica. The remix signed by Guy From Downstairs keeps to the swing as the specific Romanian sound pours into all the layers. The closing cut “Oye Como Va” features AR Latin and pays tribute to Tito Puente’s original production, stepping well outside the borders of minimal techno with its downtempo-oriented sound.
