feeder sound exclusive premiere: Ruven Medici – Freak (JorDee Remix) [Never Be Normal]

Ukrainian underground electronic music platform Never Be Normal returns to its digital playground with its 8th release featuring four original tracks signed by Swiss artist Ruven Medici alongside label head JorDee on remix duties. Titled “Back To The Roots”, the EP delivers an uplifting sound perfect for the dancefloor, elegantly infused with old-school garage funk vibes and 2-step as well as solid minimal tech house rhythms and textures. Based in Kyiv, the imprint has been powerfully activated since the Russian invasion and is actively engaged in the promotion and distribution of house and techno music, releasing timeless works from artists that dictate the rules of the game in the club music industry.

Heading Dub Solution, Ruven Medici always proved himself to be ahead of the game, constantly delivering inspiring DJ sets and productions in both digital and vinyl-only formats. Throughout time he worked with labels like Neustadtmusik, Pirka, Winder, Hoarder, Samani, Heisenberg, Meslow, Tangible, Whoyostro LTD, Ouverture, Random Deep and Miracle Juice, among others.

Incorporating various modern aspects of house and microhouse in his distinct style, JorDee is best known as the one behind Never Be Normal, doing his utmost to fly the flag for quality electronic music coming out of Ukraine and beyond. His vision led to inspiring releases on his label along with collaborations with Acidchicken Records, Crossword Academy, Dushe Label, Ipsum Records LTD, Soul Shift Music and LW Recordings.

“Ruven Medici decided to create the track “Freak” with the aim of capturing the infectious energy and groove of disco music. Inspired by artists like Chic, he wanted to pay homage to the era and bring its vibrant sound into the modern music scene. With his expertise in blending different genres, he successfully crafted a track that has a timeless quality, captivating listeners and getting them on their feet. I’ve been dreaming of a release for over three years and I think this is the most decent one in the whole discography so far. My remix sounds very intelligent with the 303 coming in strong towards the end.”

The original mix of “Freak” opens the EP with a solid breakbeat sound, powered by funk and disco sonic patterns that will make anyone start moving their body in seconds. The track explores the specific sound of the ’80s, diving deep into a powerful amalgamation of sharp drums and prominent basslines, inspiring arrangements and uplifting vocals that call for a dance. JorDee‘s remix on the other hand closes the EP with an equally driving reinterpretation to which trippy and melodic arpeggios are added on top of an ever-evolving acidic layer that fits perfectly with the high tempo.

The other tracks, “Noche Viva”, “Back To The Roots” and “Summer Drummer” smoothly combine in an odyssey of rhythms and emotions, laying out distinct vibrations which intertwine into an amazing journey ready to be devoured by collectors, selectors and enthusiasts across dancefloors worldwide. Incorporating Latin anthems, jazzy takes, hip-hop riffs and minimalistic affairs, each cut shines in its own way so expect a dazzling fusion.
