Red Pig Flower – Meduza Madness [Work In Progress]

The third record to arrive from the French imprint Work In Progress delivers two original cuts signed by Sound Of Vast’s co-founder Red Pig Flower alongside French legend Alexkid and Moroccan growing talent Monile on remix duties. Titled “Meduza Madness”, the four-tracker provides an uplifting addition to the label’s catalogue, which previously released works from Cédric Batret and Romain Lucas Cebrian aka ROAR in collaboration with artists like Levi Verspeek, Juan Zolbaran, The Willers Brothers and Nico Forster.

With both Korean and Japanese roots, the multi-disciplinary artist Red Pig Flower is now based in Berlin, from she coordinates the various projects she’s involved in. Her extended and intriguing activity in the electronic music scene brought her massive international support throughout time, having shared the decks with notable DJs at numerous events and publishing productions with imprints like mousikētekhnē, Vandalism Black Series, Brise Records, Frucht, Luos Recordings, Runemark and Baile Musik. Her unique style incorporates cross-genre musical experiments with an accent on the contemporary aspects of house and techno as well as visual art elements, like painting, photography or video installations.

Side A kicks in with the powerful vibes of “Meduza Madness”, a swinging groove designed with pumping techy percussion, a prominent bassline and a truly hypnotic funky background arrangement built with wobbling effects and warm piano notes. Following, we find Monile on the remix dropping a stripped-back version of the track, with some of the original layers kept only to be passed through different filters and compressors. Here, the tempo slips into a more minimalistic rhythm while it maintains the original energy.

On the flipside “Monkey Magic” reveals a gloomy journey, where the driving percussion, the spacious breakdowns and the complementary vocal cuts and spiralling effects elegantly merge into a thumping piece, perfect for a dimly-lighted dancefloor. Alexkid‘s re-interpretation brings deep and dubby microhouse flavours to the table, closing the wax with bright fuzzy reverberations and a steady-paced rhythm for anyone to enjoy.
