Creative Quarter Design Festival starts on May 18th
Creative Quarter Design Festival, the first big festival of the quarter around Cişmigiu Park, inspired by UniCredit Bank, will take place from May 18th to 26th 2019. The most active creative cultural area in Bucharest propose to visitors a route of over 60 special events, from exhibitions and talks to parties, a movie night, guided tours, a market design and even workshops.
The festival opening will take place on May 18th, 7 PM at the Universe Palace (23-25 Ion Brezoianu Street), an emblematic building of the quarter, with three exhibitions: Made in Creative Quarter, Mnemonics and UYDA by Ubikubi. The opening is included in the Museum Night tour.
The night goes on with a party at Beans&Dots, on Marinov’s music, also happening at the Universe Palace.
Made in Bucharest Creative Quarter, an exhibition presented by Forte Partners and held at AWE. Adaptive Work Environment, can be visited for the first time in Romania, after it represented the Creative Quarter at Madrid Design Festival at the beginning of this year. It proposes an imaginary ride on the streets of the Quarter and invites the visitor to find out the stories, spaces, ideas and people who live or have their workplaces in this area: designers, architects, artists and creators that define the Quarter, but also a few of the most hip and innovative businesses in the city.
The Ubikubi Young Designers Award (UYDA) exhibition, held at Beans & Dots, presents the prototype of the winning objects of the third edition of UYDA contest and the boards of all the projects submitted in the competition this year. The prototypes reflect a ludic, but well-documented exploration of natural materials and accessible technologies. Furthermore, it wants to highlight, in an interactive context, the creative potential of young designers discovered during this contest.
Mnemonics: Collective Memories Define Our Territory is a condensed scenography of the spaces between the Romanian city blocks, held at Mezanin, which discusses how these perimeters have evolved over the last decades of urban transformation. The exhibition brings together the carpet bar, cradles, childhood games, but also memories of old friendships and funny stories told in front of the block or in the staircase, all under the universal symbol of the key worn around the neck. Mnemonics was named by the foreign press as the “unofficial playground” of the 2018 edition of the Venice Biennial of Architecture and is for the first time accessible in Bucharest, in a reinvented version.
These nine days of the festival opens the door of architecture studios, workhouses of Romanian brands, but also production studios and micro-communities from the Quarter. A contemporary dance workshop, a yard sale or a silent party in the garden are just a few of the events that are added to the event’s agenda that celebrate the creative effervescence of the city.
The program of the festival, organised during Romanian Design Week 2019, is completed by a series of talks on design and architecture, sustainability in fashion or game design, meetings, guided tours that lets you discover the hidden history of the hood, attic floors or the newest street-art projects, workshops dedicated to the creative industry, collections and products launches, programs developed by members of the community and so much more.
A special exhibition, PosterJam Offbeat, dedicated to the Creative Quarter, with a series of posters signed by graphic designers and artists, both Romanian and foreign, will take place at Institute, The Café – 104-106 Știrbei Vodă Street. The event starts on Sunday, May 19th, starting at 6 PM.
The Creative Quarter Design Festival will host in the interior garden of the National Art University of Bucharest a parkour made by the Zerm Architecture Association from Roubaix, France, and decorated by the Romanian illustrator Saddo – Raul Oprea, as part of the Romania-France Season 2019 in collaboration with La Condition Publique. Once the module is installed, a parkour demonstration will be organized alongside the Traceurs.RO Association, the first and largest community of parkour practitioners in Romania. It will take place on Sunday, May 19th, starting at 11 AM.
Creative Quarter Design Festival ends with a series of parties, on May 26th, including a day-long party at Control Club, starting 3 PM, with four DJs from the hood, all connected to the creative industries, but also a silent party in the garden at J’ai Bistrot, starting 8 PM.
Creative Quarter Design Festival is the first major initiative of the Creative Quarter Association that outlines the organization’s preoccupations – creative entrepreneurship, community and urban development, education, design, architecture, culture or tourism development, aiming to support the growth of the community coagulated through the project.

It is a knot of the effervescence of creative communities overlapped with a space that already has the history and infrastructure needed to catalyze and accelerate the motors of the cultural and creative ecosystem.
