Romanian Design Week presents on 17-26 of May one of the most valuable local design and architecture projects

Romanian Design Week, a multidisciplinary event dedicated to local creative industries, already at its seventh edition, will be held in Bucharest from 17th to 26th of May 2019.

This edition proposes three circuits that integrate more than 30 entities from the communities and hubs Cotton Industry, Creative Tribe and Incotroceni.

Additionally, the festival includes a central exhibition, which presents some of the best projects made in the last year by designers, graphic artists and Romanian architects, a series of capsule exhibitions signed by creative and local organizations, but also from Moldova or France, a special concept store dedicated to the Romanian design, but also the second edition of the RDW Awards, awards that encourage excellence within creative industries and promote Romanian designers.

The central exhibition of Romanian Design Week opens for the first time for the general public the BCR building from University Square and hosts over 200 of the best projects made in the last year by Romanian designers, graphic artists and architects. The exhibition, the most complex one since the beginning of the festival, will bring together five categories – Architecture, Product Design, Graphic Design, Fashion and Multidisciplinary Design. It is also included in the Museums Night circuit taking place in Romania on the 18th of May.

Visitors will be able to discover a variety of projects, from the world’s first bamboo bicycle, a digital dictionary for advertising and online enthusiasts, a bookmark that adapts the light of the reader’s room and clothing items that claim society’s need to promote equal rights and mutual respect between sexes, to abandoned houses rejuvenated and reintegrated into the life of the community and of course other interactive installations.

The RDW central space also includes a series of capsule exhibitions, signed by creative people and local or international organizations: Lille Metropole 2020 – World Design Capital, part of the Romania-France Season Program; Bucharest University of Arts and Marcel Klamer; Igloo Association – Habitat and Architecture; West University of Timisoara – Faculty of Arts and Design; Zeppelin; Designforkidz; Miloš Jovanović; Moldovan Design Week; Smart Design Challenge, as well as exhibitions, installations or branded content made in partnership with, Absolut, Brico Depôt, Illy, IKEA, MedLife and Renault.

The exhibition design is signed by Attila Kim Architects, as every year, and proposes a complex route that follows the personality and characteristics of the building, but also captures the visitor through the elements used in the arrangement and integration of the content. The installations inside the building are made with the support of Cemacon.

A Concept Store, developed in partnership with George, the first smart banking from BCR, will be open to the large public during the 10-day festival and will present a selection of carefully curated design products – ceramic objects, lighting fixtures and books to stationery, accessories or jewellery.

In addition, Romanian Design Week presents this year RDW Talks, a series of conferences on design issues, where the passion for the field is dissected to the finest details. RDW Talks conferences are presented by Medlife.

RDW 2019 celebrates creative communities, so visitors will take part in a multidisciplinary demonstration with three creative clusters and three exploration circuits: Cotton Industry, Creative Tribe and Încotroceni.

The RDW Awards, a format offered by glo, rewards the projects from the central exhibition that distinguish by an unprecedented approach, with the objective to celebrate what Romanian design has best to offer in 2019. The winners of the trophies will be chosen by the 2019 RDW creative board.

Romanian Design Week supports and amplifies in 2019 the discourse of local creative industries, highlighting the major contribution that creative communities have in transforming the capital into a truly modern and European city.

Visitors will be able to get to know a dynamic ecosystem where any creative mind finds its co-working space, NOD makerspace, will visit Mater, the first material library in South East Europe, will take part in a series of open doors and will join the program proposed by RECUL, Protohub, La Firul Ierbii and Fabrica Gastrobar.

Creative Tribe // 22th of May, beginning from 18:00

Giulești Street 14Participants can join a series of events that will help them connect with design at many levels: from exhibitions and an interactive installation to workshops, discussions on fashion or animation, the official launch of a creative school and other activities and spaces to discover on the six floors of the ISAF building, celebrating the community with a party on the terrace at the end.

This year, Încotroceni will bring to the forefront the theme of recycling and will emphasize the need for this through a fair with vintage objects collected from the neighbours‘ attics, tours with vintage cars, a movie night and, the resistance piece, a jazz concert. Also, there are over 20 private courtyards and gardens with activities that can be visited throughout the weekend.

Romanian Design Week has set itself as the most important multidisciplinary festival in Romania during the previous six the current state of development of the local design and creative industries: architecture, urbanism, interior editions so far – an x-ray of design, graphic design, fashion design, object design or other initiatives or projects that use creativity as the main development resource.

A project signed by The Institute, Romanian Design Week is an annual festival that promotes contemporary Romanian design as a tool that can contribute to social, economic and cultural progress. It is the first project entirely devoted to design, which targets both the large public and the professionals. Each year, Romanian Design Week draws a map of events and spaces that promote design.
George, the first intelligent banking, is a BCR © innovation, a financial digital ecosystem, with current account and dedicated card, which you can only get it online in just 10 minutes. At the heart of the first intelligent banking in Romania is the most popular digital banking platform from Europe, which already has over 4 million users. The platform was developed on the basis of advanced digital research, being created by IT teams, design, psychologists and behavioural sociologists. As a result of the involvement of ordinary people in all stages of the project, George has an exceptional level of customization: everyone can create their own version, adapted to their specific banking needs.
