Federsen – Zen Effects EP (w. Kooscha remix) [spclnch]
The Dutch/Belarusian record label spclnch (short for Spacelunch) returns with another cosmic adventure in the realms of dub techno with Federsen at the controls alongside Kooscha on remix duties. Founded in Minsk in 2019 by Thomas Carmody, the imprint exhibits an extended digital and vinyl catalogue dedicated to a fantastic multimedia universe revolving around the space adventures of Spacelunch and Cat, a concept that delivers original scripts connected by consistent sonic tales.
Among the artists who so far collaborated with the venture, we find Basicnoise, Heavenchord, Schulz Audio, Altone, R.Hz, Nicolas Barnes, Skytechnic, Upwellings and Giacomo Pellegrino, among many others. It’s definitely nice to see San Francisco-based artist Federsen returning to the label with fresh sounds as his hazy dub-infused productions are always deep and driving.
Influenced by dub reggae recording techniques, he uses a combination of vintage tape delays and analog equipment to create a distinctive sound. Throughout time, he released some of his works with outlets like Deepindub, Silent Season, Ranges, Pong Musiq, Vade Mecum, Lempuyang, Greyscale, Ohm Series, Van Bonn and his own Fifth Interval.
Side A opens with the steady-paced groove of “Satori Dub” laying out a wavy and chilled rhythm flavoured with reverberating congas, grainy crackles and a solid bassline. The background chords remain subtle as the percussion falls into focus delivering an immersive atmosphere. Following, “Druid Heights” picks up the pace, dropping an uplifting yet minimalistic composition where all the layers are slowly revealed and form an organic sonic affair. The echoing percussion elements and vocals add extra mystery to this story, making the cut perfect for laid-back afternoon sessions.
On the flip first there’s “Zazen” pushing the tempo even higher without disrupting the flow of the EP. The low-slung beat elegantly merges with the grainy textures creating a hypnotic rotation with just a few breathing moments in order to keep forming tension across the frequency spectrum. Closing, Kooscha‘s remix of A2 switches gears, bringing forward a unique combination of minimal and dub techno designed with swinging drumming patterns, ever-evolving warm textures and spacious breaks, perfect for contemplation and slow body movements.
