VA - 10 Years of Affekt Recordings [Affekt]

Alex Dolby celebrates 10 Years of Affekt with a mighty 33-track compilation.

Alex Dolby is a long serving DJ and producer who has overtime found his focus of underground techno that is analogue and, in some shape, or form, experimental, but always keeping an eye on the dance floor. His exciting style has seen his own works landing on labels like Developer’s Modularz, Emmanuel’s ARTS, Marco Bailey’s MB Elektronics and New York’s Teksupport for example.

Celebrating 10 Years this month, Alex’s label Affekt Recordings has curated a collection of a total 33 tracks, many of which are from the labels catalogue and already released. There are some unreleased gems included too such as Giri’s “Mucca” which sounds like an astronaut stuck in outer space and has a quite relaxed feeling for a techno jam. Italy’s Luca La Rocca submits “Arcano” that uses a seemingly random modular pattern over a regimented kick to keep the flow rolling. PTTRNRCRRNT are an interesting Belgian duo and their track “Virtue 1” is a dub techno masterclass bordering on ambient as the kick is so soft, but it generates a fascinating atmosphere. Berkel has released on the mighty Edit Select Records and his track “Pure Hate” is a ripping analogue storm of electronic darkness.

A couple we enjoyed that are already available to purchase such as Simbiose’s track “Multicellular Matrices” has a spaced-out atmosphere with subtle features that is met by a powerful, marauding bassline soaked in menace. Also, the Pär Grindvik remix of Alex Dolby’s “Purple” has a nightmarish sound with its use of a tense drone over a hypnotic rolling rhythm.
