exclusive premiere: Quenum – Step by Step [Balance Music]
Melbourne-based record label Balance Music announces “Briggs Street EP” signed by veteran DJ and producer Quenum to arrive soon, featuring three fresh and uplifting house-infused cuts designed for the dancefloor and one deeper composition for the closing. The Australian imprint specialises in promoting quality independent electronic music coming from artists worldwide for quite some time now, in the form of showcase events, podcasts, releases, and the globally renowned Balance Series.
A lover of music in all its forms, Quenum has an established 30-year career and has gained the respect of techno and house pioneers as well as the following of the younger generation. When he settled in London in the 90s, he started working with Paulo Nascimento, a studio musician and sound engineer, and in 1997 they released their first EP on Pacific Records. This is how project Access 58 was born. The two artists performed live and played DJ sets at all the legendary London clubs while releasing over 30 EPs on various labels, including their own. In 2001 he moved to Switzerland, where he met Luciano, with whom he would make history by founding Cadenza after composing the legendary techno anthem “Orange Mistake”. From 2013 to 2019, Quenum worked in partnership with Cesare vs Disorder. Together as Azimute, they toured Asia, Australia and South America, released their productions on Serialism and ran their label nights in Brazil, London and Berlin. Among the labels he collaborated with throughout time, we find Transmat, Crosstown Rebels, Cocoon, Fabric, Get Physical, Alphahouse, Ruta 5, Rebellion and Soma, to name only a few.
The EP opens with the title track “Briggs Street”, designed with a peculiar rising bass and a sort of looped progression that continuously pumps energy into the rhythm. It would feel like a transmission from a different dimension if it weren’t for the almost languorous vocal anchoring you in the present. This is one for the serious heads. Following, our featured premiere, “Step by Step”, reveals an ever-evolving deep and funky narrative where random vocal statements float on top of the percussive arrangements. At the same time, beautiful discordant stabs, a throbbing bassline and a direct house beat all merge into an amazing flow. Next, “Small Brain” features an inviting jungle stomp that draws you in before a deep and blubbering bassline catches you in its thick web. Then, it forges into a breakdown crafted with intensity and mystery. The closing cut “Batman Wake Up” switches to a steady-paced rhythm, elegantly complemented by a warm bass that rumbles and rolls, euphoric background textures and dripping synth notes, perfect for the after-hours.
