Various Artists – ZMT 001 [Zimotik]
The freshly established vinyl-only record label Zimotik presents its first release in the form of a Various Artists compilation featuring four steaming tracks signed by Birdsmakingmachine, Marko Nastic & Coppe, Dubfound and Lowris. Founded earlier this year in Chisinau, Moldova, the imprint is run by Olandeep and Dubfound, who also co-owns and manages Swoon, Tobus and Nurum Music.
Side A opens with the twisted funky sounds of “Dexeus Why” delivered by Birdsmakingmachine, a mysterious group of artists known for their releases on their eponymous label as well as Half Baked, Magic Mountain Club, Honne Music, Lessizmore Records and Unreleased Plattform. The rhythm calls for dancing backed-up by rap vocal samples while the groovy piano notes and heavy modulated effects fall into focus. Following we find “Tapesty”, a collaborative work between Marko Nastic and Coppe infused with eerie vocals and out-of-this-world technoid arrangements. The cut is minimalistic in nature, yet provides an uplifting vibe with a dark touch.
On Side B we first find “North Express” dropped by Dubfound, a techy and engaging cut that sweeps the frequencies with a solid bassline and rolling percussion while sci-fi effects and swirling elements add a futuristic feeling to the whole. His music always sounds fresh and intriguing with imprints like Sleep Is Commercial, Cadenza, Vinyl Club and Fox Trax publishing his works, aside from what he dispatches on his own playgrounds. Diving deeper we find his side project Jezellic with a crisp, experimental and minimalistic touch. Closing the wax, there’s “The Meaning Of Sound”, a heavy-rotating and hypnotic composition by French DJ and producer Lowris. The track provides constant tension through looping dark tones and background textures, a throbbing bassline and really trippy sound effects.
