Harcea Pacea – Let it flow
original painting on a 20 x 60 cm canvas, 2024
“Let it flow” (2024), by Romanian street artist Harcea Pacea, is an original painting on a 20 × 60 cm canvas, vividly expressing the artist’s themes of urban energy, resistance, and creative force.
At the centre of the piece, a stylised rat ascends, a signature figure in Harcea Pacea’s visual universe. Familiar to those who have seen his past murals in Iași, Bucharest or other cities in Romania, the character wears a gas mask, transforming the urban creature into both an observer and a participant in the visual narrative. It rides upward on an oversized spray can, as though launching itself and its message into the sky. From the can, a red stream of spray paint flows downward.
While this image is uniquely Harcea Pacea’s own, viewers might notice an intentional dialogue with cultural touchstones: the rat-on-capsule trajectory playfully reverses the famous image from Dr Strangelove, in which Major T. J. “King” Kong rides a falling bomb; and the motif of riding a can evokes the iconography of Banksy’s Cans Festival poster (London 2008), in which a feminine figure rides a spray can shaped like a projectile.
The rising rat, masked and determined, embodies both the resilience of street culture and the unstoppable flow of artistic expression, a fitting visual manifesto from an artist whose murals have brought social critique to Iași’s public spaces.
