ODD Theory #10 / Post-truth

odd theory 10

Suddenly we discovered that we live in a “post-truth world”. Our trust in liberal cyber-optimism was replaced by disappointment. From now on, in order to claim that we understand well what happens, we will have to leave behind not only the TV but also the Facebook account… No. It’s not like that. It’s not so simple. It is naïve to talk about “fake news” without referring to “false consciousness” or to the decay of the bourgeois public sphere. Ovidiu Gherasim-Proca will present and discuss some of the ideas he had in mind when working on the book Almost counter-discourse, published in 2017 by tranzit.ro/ iasi.

Ovidiu Gherasim-Proca is lecturer at the Department of Political Sciences, International Relations and European Studies (“Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași). Co-editor of a volume on digitalised politics (Guvernanța electronică. De la promisiuni teoretice la realități empirice, Editura Universităţii “Alexandru Ioan Cuza”, Iași, 2014) he studies the technological revision of democratic practices and worries about the intellectual confusion that comes with it. The latest projects aim to develop theoretical and collaborative-conversational means of understanding current trends in political mobilization (“Borders, Barriers and Protest Culture. The New Politics of Social Movements in Central and Eastern Europe” – Patterns Lectures) the construction and deconstruction of the political discourse (“Discursive frames: culture – politics”, tranzit.ro/ Iasi) or the critical re-examination of the “bourgeois public sphere” (“Retracing the subject”, tranzit.ro/ Iași).
