The artist is first and foremost an enemy of life. A killer, even when extroverted, self-indulgent, life-inspired, reality-driven. Through representation he turns any lively subject into a visual mummy. That’s because, in order to become an icon, an image must obliterate the flow of reality. Representation is the artist’s first weapon. The second is the mise en scène. By means of the latter, a funerary action almost by definition, the dead body is displayed on stage. Every exhibition is a theatrical production, the work is presented like a relic; the space is cleaned and sanctified either through cleansing or through social convention.

For a while now, as a gallerist I have felt half-undertaker, half-priest. In museums the atmosphere is much more clearly similar to that of a graveyard, the works point to an existential context that is gone, you are supposed to keep quiet; in short, the phenomenon celebrated there kicked the bucket long ago. That is why there is a Romanian peasant museum, but no traditional peasants around, a village museum, but houses are built with modern technology, a Roma culture museum, but no single nomadic gypsy, a natural history museum filled with fossils, while wild life is on the brink of extinction. A gallery exhibition is less like a funeral, as it is the first burial, attended by relatives, where the victim is mourned and celebrated through rituals with chants and wine. Could it all go astray? Obviously. Depending on how the ritual unfolds, on whether the feeling of sacred connection lingers in the participants and the artist can move on to the next “victim”. Only when attending a real funeral, several days ago, did I become aware of the risk of losing the magic of the sacred feeling.
Not long ago a wonderful artist died. Herself a church goer, she had a sumptuous and long funeral, a “full-option” orthodox style ritual. Next comes the cemetery, with the most brutal act of the ritual: the entombment. Priests in final chanting, coffin sealed and lowered into the ground. A minute after, instead of 4-5 men with shovels, there comes a bobcat excavator that covers the tomb with a few efficient moves. “BAU!” WHOA! The spell is gone. Enter (violently) the mechanical profane, with all the images of mass graves of the past century. Mutatis mutandis, this is how you can fail in a vernissage: if disbelief is not suspended, if the profane eats the sacred alive, if the priest (here – the gallerist) performs his service hastily, mechanically or driven by greed. Apparently you could say that the story of art is all about death and murder. This is exactly what it is all about, and a perceptive artist will take things much further. His final destination in the artistic representation will be Death itself. He will attempt to overcome the deadlock by portraying Death. The Blind One will be displayed, re-presented, studied, understood. Medusa in the mirror. One may dare hope that through art and by putting “It” in the foreground, Death will overcome Death.

Megeshet, mivelhogy minden a szertartás színrevitelétől függ. Megérkeztünk a temetőbe, ahol a szertartás legkegyetlenebb felvonása vár ránk, maga a sírbatétel. A pópák kántáltak, a koporsóra fedelet szögeztek, majd aláeresztették a gödörbe. A következő pillanatban, a lapáttal felfegyverkezett szokásos gyászhuszárok helyett, egy törpe-kotrógép lépett a színre, ami néhány apró, de hatékony mozdulattal azon nyomban betömte a gödröt. “BAU!” Uramisten! Ábrázolásával magát a Halált veszi célba.
