Exhibition opening: MNAC Bucharest | June 2, 2019 | 5:00-9:00 PM
Visiting period: June 3, 2019 – September 29, 2019, during museum visiting hours.

GHEORGHE represents the final stage of a long series of interventions on the parental home — a construction dating from the beginning of the XXth century in Ieud, Maramures, built by the artist’s grandfather. In actuality, before being taken down, the house was subjected to a first inside action, in the form of a performance entitled “Resilience” (2017). The artist carved and scribbled the walls, changing the original civilian function with another — both aesthetic and mnemonic. “Resilience”, which consisted of a dialogue of hazard between the harsh instruments of sculpture and the fragility of clay, is the first stage of “liberation” GHEORGHE’s skeleton from the matter of the house.

GHEORGHE is a reveal of camouflage; it represents the bringing to the surface and to date of hidden techno-organic structures; it is an act of self-exposure and self-employment in the direct and irreversible process of degradation. Beyond the traditional, religious and heroic iconographic connotations stored in the “name”, GHEORGHE acquires its significance through the topo-communicative quality it receives through its location. GHEORGHE is both a critical dialogue partner (in a cultural, civil, spiritual, architectural and ideological sense) with two symbolic buildings — the “house” as Cathedral and the “house” as Palace, as well as a sign of reorientation on the current map of the world.

Dumitru Gorzo (b. 1975 Ieud, Maramureș) lives and works in Bushwick, New York, where he is represented by Slag Gallery. Dumitru Gorzo’s visual language brings together the traditional medium and technologies with modernity in a critical and affirmative semiotical direction addressed to social change and image problems of the present.

Car access is made through the B3 Gate (museum entrance). Pedestrian access remains unchanged.
