The Oddball Creatives come out swinging with the fresh and jazzy ‘Wondering & Wishing Like Me’, a mighty fine project oozing with real top-notch musical chemistry. Joseph Malik and Daniel Walls have been building their Oddball Creatives world for a while now, from the early ‘Only Fans’ and ‘Adult Contemporary’ releases to their work shaping Kameelah Waheed’s standout singles ‘My Whole World’ and ‘Be A Lion’. But this new release hails the moment where everything all comes together with a serious cast: Kameela Waheed bringing that warm, grounded vocal presence; Colin Steele adding his award‑winning trumpet lines; Darren Morris colouring the edges with Hammond and Wurlitzer; ENIA on backing vocals; and Joseph Malik himself, returning through an old vocal take rescued from the Young Fathers studio; as he and Daniel Walls really bring the magic on this production. The song itself is soulful, beautifully human, and fabulously textured. Joseph and Kameela sit together effortlessly, weaving melodies and spoken word in a way that nods to the Native Tongues era. It’s the kind of track that feels honest, and built from real experience, and performed by a bunch of creative oddballs who know exactly what they’re doing! Refreshingly different!
