Andrei Ciubuc – Back 2 Back To The Future LP (Part 1/3) [Playedby]

Local artist Andrei Ciubuc presents his extended LP titled “Back 2 Back To The Future” on the Romanian platform Playedby, unfolding over three vinyl-only chapters. Released as a double 12″, this first part lays the foundation of the journey with hypnotic rhythms, minimal grooves and intricate sound design that highlight his ability to balance dancefloor functionality with deeper narratives. Each track stands strong on its own, while also acting as a fragment of the larger story that continues in the next two volumes. The mastering is provided by Mike Grinser at Manmade Mastering, while label head Cristi Klebleev signs the artwork.

Having been in a special relationship with music from early childhood, Andrei Ciubuc gradually transitioned from playing the violin, guitar and bass guitar to synthesisers, drum machines and various other analog and digital gadgets that helped him to completely immerse himself in electronic music. Around 2015, he dispatched his first official releases on UVAR and Malonian (to which he will return twice), followed by memorable titles published via Anakronik, Tooloop Records, Cuplet and BP Mind Series. In 2017, he founded the local label Draganenii alongside Rhadoo, adding two EPs to the discography under their A_R moniker, while also getting involved in collaborative projects such as Backstage Boys (w. Dan Andrei and Kozo), VRAC (w. Vlad Radu), Dick & Mutt (w. George Obogeanu), Eu Și Cu Ăsta (w. Kozo) and Milf & Cookies (w. Emi).

Last year, Playedby celebrated 10 years of activity in the underground electronic music scene, further consolidating its reputation in both local and international scenes. Find out more from our interview with founder and curator Cristi Klebleev, featured in an extended article presenting Longplay II – 10 Years Anniversary Compilation.

The journey opens with “Swarm”, instantly setting the tone like a system coming online. The percussive elements slowly merge with a permeating bassline, spinning chords and haunting pads into a tight loop that subtly shifts with each cycle. Balancing tension and release throughout, the track feels made for early-morning control as it can reshape the room without ever trying to dominate it. Next up, “Raw Minimal” unfolds as a statement about the genre itself, with the groove being stripped down to its essentials while maintaining a deliberate roughness drenched in modular microvariations. In contrast, “Heat Hat” bursts with playful, kinetic energy, weaving a complex tapestry of shifting patterns, nuanced swing changes and warm textures that keep the rhythm constantly moving.

On the second record we first find “Exobase”, which leans into low-end pressure, evoking the sensation of floating just outside the dancefloor while still tethered to its atmosphere. The groove feels distant yet grounded, layered with a precise sci-fi tinge. This is where the “future” aspect of the title becomes most obvious. On the flipside, “Mini Mall” shifts gears, rendering seemingly mundane loops into something hypnotically addictive. There’s an ironic charm here, as snippets of everyday consumer-space ambience are transformed into pulsing, rhythmic textures that draw you in despite their simplicity. Closing, “Memory Skunk” dives deep into abstract minimal, focusing on the complementary elements that fade in and out rather than the core beat, feeling like an unresolved thought, intentionally left hanging.
