Barac – Memories Of Our Lives [Storytellers]

In 2016, a raw snippet of Barac mixing at an underground party at Club Eden was uploaded to YouTube by the online platform Storytellers. It was among the channel’s first posts, yet it quickly went viral, giving the initiative unexpected momentum and setting in motion the steady growth of a project dedicated to exploring and capturing the essence of the Romanian sound in all its forms.

Now, ten years later, the story comes full circle as Barac returns to unveil the fifth chapter of Storytellers‘ main vinyl series with “Memories Of Our Lives” EP, delivering an immersive and driving sound that reflects on a decade of community, connection and the enduring spirit of the Rominimal movement. The mastering is signed by Rob Small Mastering LTD and the artwork by Mihai Galbinisteanu.

During this time, the platform has evolved into one of the most active and influential outlets covering the underground electronic music scene, bringing forward inspiring online streaming events, podcasts, exclusive premieres, as well as memorable digital and vinyl releases. The label’s discography now counts 25 digital titles (EPs, LPs and VAs) and 4 records signed by dot13, Mihai Pol, Bryz and George Heerd.

Opening and guiding the journey, “Walk Safely Through The Maze Of Human Life” unfolds as a hypnotic sonic affair, built around stripped-back percussive patterns, lush ambient textures and subtle yet precise complementary details. Trippy vocal layers drift in and out of focus, while a pulsating bassline at the core leads the rhythm, giving the track a fully immersive and enveloping swing.

Following, “Don’t Sleep, Don’t Stop” breaks from the standard 4/4 measure and ventures into a shifting, quirky rhythm. The mid-range treatment on the kicks and snares gives them a sharp, resonant edge, while the looping sequences interlock with the repetitive vocal sample, creating a twisted sense of depth and motion.

On the flipside, we find the title track “Memories Of Our Lives”, built around a vibrant, low-slung groove that feels like it could go on forever, evoking time as the true keeper of our innermost thoughts and memories. The rhythm section is imbued with restrained ethereal pads and drifting shamanic chants which are fully revealed in their intensity during the breakdowns, creating an organic, evolving soundscape. The guiding vocal cuts add a touch of nostalgia, making the track feel both introspective and liberating at the same time.
