DJ Real Madrid – No Smoking EP [L.E.T Music]

Swiss musician and half of the well-known duo and live act Skiclub Toggenburg, Tillmann Ostendarp, drops his first vinyl release as DJ Real Madrid on L.E.T Music. Titled “No Smoking”, the EP provides four groovy cuts composed and recorded over a week in the artist’s studio, where he surrounded himself with various instruments, machines and guests like Dino Brandao and Mel D, who jammed on the microphone for one of the tracks. The result offers a jiggly and vibrant sound flavoured by minimal, breaks, funk and electro influences.

Operating as a record label, events platform and artist management agency since 2011, Zurich-based L.E.T Music (Les Enfants Terribles) has steadily grown into a tight local and international collective over the years, focusing on music, innovation and friendship. Side A opens with the swinging vibes of “GGGGGG”, where Dino Brandao and Mel D’s psychedelic vocals smoothly blend into a funkadelic groove elegantly led by stripped-back percussion patterns, haunting strings and a moving saxophone line. Following, “Merlasco” switches gears into breakbeat and deep electronica, laying out a warm yet dynamic atmosphere powered by bleeps, microglitches and sharp synth arrangements.

On the flipside “Leave it” reveals itself as a big percussive jam fueled by vibrant didgeridoo chords, funky drums and meandering bass guitar touches, as well as carefully placed vocal cuts here and there for an extra twist. Closing, “Ta Ta”, a Juno-driven deep homage to the god of funk, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, flows like a daydream, delivering a solid mix of soulful funk and bebop jazz framed into a modern minimal aesthetic.
