Crihan & Jay Tripwire – Gizmo EP [Into The Woods]
UK-based platform Into The Woods returns to its vinyl series with “Gizmo EP” signed by Romanian artist Crihan and Canadian DJ & producer Jay Tripwire, two masters of the craft who join forces for this unique collaborative project that blends their distinct styles into a cohesive and forward-thinking body of work.
The record marks the 6th pressing in the label’s discography, following memorable EPs from Sepp, Swoy, Alexis Cabrera and Lumieux, as well as a Various Artists compilation featuring Vlad Arapasu, t.na and the two protagonists of this amazing 12″. Born out of the eponymous and legendary underground party taking place somewhere east of London, Into The Woods evolved into a renowned international artist agency, running ongoing showcase events and an inspiring podcast series, aside from publishing top-quality vinyl and digital releases.
Side A opens with “Gizmo’s Darkside,” revealing a groovy yet trippy minimalist sound designed with a carefully calculated balance between hypnotic pads and crisp, stripped-down drumming patterns that set the tone of the EP. Following, “A Message From Beyond” lowers the tempo and dives deep into uncharted sonic territories, placing a heavily-phased vocal sample to lead the whole journey, where percussion explodes while the background textures seem to remain suspended in time.
On the B-Side, “Miles Away” offers a rather cinematic composition, as the main rhythm and a couple of complementary layers resonate with a twist on the frequency spectrum, creating a distinct contrast between the immersive and the dynamic elements of the track.
