Ōtautahi/Christchurch-based DJ and producer Patella arrives on FAFO Records with “Strange World EP”, a collection of five tracks that seamlessly blends groove-driven house, downtempo atmospheres, and percussive flair into immersive, shape-shifting worlds.

With a flourishing reputation across Aotearoa’s underground electronic music scene, Patella elegantly combines house and downtempo elements with unique grooves, bringing forward a signature sound that invites listeners to dive into immersive soundscapes that defy easy categorisation. His last EP, “Planet Moguana”, released via Glass Half Full, has rapidly become one of the year’s most talked-about releases, being recognised among the nominees for Best EP in New Zealand’s underground music awards. Beyond releases, Patella‘s dynamic presence behind the decks has lit up a variety of local stages, from energetic sets at festivals like Twominds to genre-bending performances at clubs all across the country.

The title track “Strange World” opens the EP with a steady-paced rhythm designed with psychedelic and minimal aesthetics, setting a proper introduction for the whole journey. Following, our featured premiere, “What you doing”, raises the tempo and dives deep into a vibrant house-fueled twister, perfect for the dancefloor. The vocals add extra flavour to the whole, while the breakdowns switch to introspective frequencies. Next up, “You can’t f**k with it” drops tight percussive patterns combined with delayed effects, wobbling basslines and electric intermissions that merge into a solid cut. Taking this distinct combination further, “Bphg” loads a heavy low-end sound mixed with sharp synth stabs, tunnelling chords and a warm bass that swings into deep-house territory. Closing, “Reflective spaces” smoothly slides back into minimal, offering an uplifting and hypnotising vibe, suitable for late-night sessions at any party.
