Thabo Mapoulo aka Napsoul (or Napsoul Magic) is a self-taught South African artist whose sonic journey is rooted in authenticity, emotion and a deep reverence for groove. He embarked on his musical journey in 2015, exploring hip-hop, R&B and lo-fi, gradually refining his craft, working solo or with close friends. It was in 2021 that he found his creative home in deep house, a genre whose introspective atmosphere and rhythmic depth provided the perfect canvas for his emotional expression.
His 2022 debut single, “Lesego”, dedicated to a late friend, marked a pivotal moment, deeply personal and musically resonant, laying bare the depth of feeling that would come to define his work. The following year, “Roscommon and Love” became a breakout success, earning critical acclaim and a growing fanbase drawn to his meditative, soulful sound. In 2024, he stepped into DJing and collaborated with artists like Kaynine Deep, KoptjieSA, Lexiton Deep and X-soul RSA, further developing his sonic identity.
With releases on respected labels such as Deep Clicks Music, Fynn Music Company, Inkognito Records, Less BlaBla Records, Sound Vessel Records and Trusted Rhythm Records, Napsoul‘s rise has been steady and intentional. His track “Take It Deep” on Stork Recordings earned him placements on Traxsource’s Essential Deep House and Deep House 100 playlists. Now balancing production and live sets, he continues to shape the deep house culture in South Africa and beyond, one immersive journey at a time.
“The title of this EP symbolises a fresh direction in my musical journey. It references a popular synth-based deep house sound in South Africa, which I am experimenting with for the first time. This EP marks my exploration into this style, signaling an exciting shift in my sound.” – Napsoul
“The Wave” traces a rich narrative arc, laying out fluid and emotionally charged rhythms and textures. Beginning with the bold mid-tempo motion of “Ride On” which sets the tone, moving into self-revelation with “Know Me” and finally aiming for emotional resonance and longevity through “Never Forget”, the EP serves as a statement about evolution, connection and legacy in Napsoul’s artistic voyage. Sonically, it blends the warmth of deep house with subtle Amapiano influences, offering a sound that feels both rooted and progressive.
From rich textures and emotive undertones, warm synth pads and subtle melodic elements to laid-back percussion patterns and minimalist arrangements, each track creates an organic flow, weaving an inspiring balance between classic deep house elements and contemporary South African sound design.
As a whole, “The Wave” doesn’t just move, it carries, making it suitable for both introspective listening and dancefloor settings. The artist notes: “The theme is all about personal growth, adventure and the excitement of discovering where this new path leads, with hopes of reaching greater heights. As I venture into this new musical territory, a larger audience will begin to discover and understand who I am as an artist.”
