5 Favourites from Restless Planet co-founder Bunny Ross

To celebrate the first Ultra Violets VA from Seattle-based Restless Planet, we have invited the co-founder of the label, Bunny Ross, to share some of his favourite tracks with us. The VA release features a host of artists from the West Coast, showcasing a diverse selection of sounds spread across the seven tracks…

Let’s dive in to check out some of Bunny’s recent favourites:

Alex Kassian – A Reference to E2–E4 by Manuel Göttsching [Test Pressing Recordings]

Alex Kassian’s rework of E2–E4 came out on Test Pressing last year, and with the added remix from Mad Professor, this record was a must-have for me. Alex’s music has a way of pulling you in and stretching time. Here, he reshapes a timeless classic with Balearic airiness and live instrumentation, bringing an organic fluidity that lifts the spirits.

Ciel & D . Tiffany ft. Adam Pits – Wonk Donk (ft. Lil Mushroom) [Banoffee Pies]

Wonky Donk is great because of its aggressive concentration of talent, featuring three of my four favourite Canadian producers (nod to Jex Opolis). I can’t say enough about this group or Banoffee Pies – other than the vision and production that went into this release is unreal. At a relatively short six minutes and thirty seconds, Wonky Donk shape shifts several times, taking the dancefloor on multiple journeys that hit every time.

Pure Science – Ekeyz [Favorite Recordings]

I came across Ekeyz last year through Lea Lisa’s Many Shades of House compilation on Favorite Recordings, and it instantly grabbed me. The way it balances deep, rolling grooves with a raw, dubbed-out atmosphere makes it a standout. There’s a hypnotic quality in the vocal that makes it timeless and forward-thinking, exactly the kind of thing I love to get lost in, and probably the reason this reissue hits as well today as it did in ‘98.

Duval Timothy – First Rain [Carrying Colour]

Duval Timothy’s First Rain is a track I keep coming back to for its raw beauty and unique approach to composition. Duval’s signature style is on full display here, blending field recording with heavily saturated piano. The work tells a story, and for producers, it’s a reminder to let experiences and familiar sounds into our work.

Fantastic Man – Solar Surfing [Kitjen]

Solar Surfing is a sneaky track; it’s understated but highly addictive. It centres around a droning pulse and rolling groove that draws me into this meditative state, guided by an introspective vocal… but just as it settles in, the energy subtly tilts and the track’s energy is wholly intensified. Like all Fantastic Man’s work… It’s hypnotic, unpredictable, and never tired… one for the heads.
