feeder sound exclusive premiere: Timbral Shift (Andu Simion & Vlad Arapasu) – I Really [Howl Records]
Released by the Italian label Howl Records, “Terrific EP” by Andu Simion emerges from the industrial heart of Romania, delivering three glitchy, acid-tinged tracks that capture the essence of Ploiești. The material explores rhythm, space and ambience, blending urban grit with introspective calm. Featuring the debut collaboration with Vlad Arapasu under the Timbral Shift alias, it marks a bold creative step for Andu and a statement from the Romanian underground.
Andu Simion is not a newcomer to the minimal stage. Over the course of his career, he has worked with incremental minimal labels and developed multiple collaborative projects. However, every time he surprises with a playful selection of compositions that is supposed to mimic a trip through the night, body, space and time.
Hailing from the outskirts of Ploiești, Romania, his sound evokes the industrial side of the city. While inspired by the Romanian minimal movement, he has crafted his own particular style: a deep, if maybe just a little acid-infused journey. Andu is also a third of the Lisière Collectif and half of A Dublu, Anduli, Timbral Shift or Two Metromaniac Guys projects, making him a well-established member of the Romanian underground scene with numerous releases on labels like Palinoia, Polen, Particular, Atipic, Cueva Records, Diffuse Reality, Insound Recordings and Cakeman, among others.
“Collaborating with Vlad was a very natural process. We didn’t overthink things – just trusted our instincts and let the ideas flow. The track came together during a few remote studio sessions where we found a shared groove: something stripped-back, but with a lot of movement and also a glitchy vocal (which was the main idea of the track).” – Andu Simion
Timbral Shift is definitely a project to keep an eye on, as both artists convey a distinct sonic experience. Vlad Arapasu is the one behind local venture Kontent and, throughout time, he worked with labels such as Vivus Records, Unic, AtipicLab, Subtil, Skip Audio, Eastenderz, Serialism and Afterhours. In 2022 he also produced two exclusive tracks for the “Explorări artistic ale spațiului public” street art exhibition at Lente brought forward through Save or Cancel and co-financed by Bucharest City Hall through ArCub within the “Affective Bucharest 2022” programme.
The other two tracks, “Terrific” and “Symmetric II” are equally dynamic, laying out uplifting stripped-down rhythms, acidic basslines and enveloping background atmospheres, making the EP a must have for digital collectors and electronic music enthusiasts.
Based in Genoa, Howl Records is curated by Giovanni Verrina and Germano Ventura aka Howl Ensemble and it focuses on publishing funk and techno influenced dancefloor music, with a modern twist.
