George Heerd – Homebase EP [Storytellers]
Romanian electronic music platform and record label Storytellers returns with the 4th title in its vinyl-only series with George Heerd at the controls delivering “Homebase EP”. The record lays out an intriguing combination of minimal house, tech house and breakbeat, smoothly flavoured with acid and electro influences, highlighting the artist’s distinct style. The mastering is provided by Mike Grinser at Manmade Mastering Berlin and the artwork is signed by Mihai Galbinisteanu.
Active since 2016, the Storytellers project steadily grew over the years, starting from streaming videos recorded at the famous Bucharest clubs Eden and Guesthouse by two friends that shared a common passion for minimal techno and microhouse music to becoming an international venture showcasing inspiring podcasts and exclusive premieres, as well as memorable digital and vinyl releases. So far, the discography counts three 12″ materials by dot13, Mihai Pol and Bryz, while the digital catalogue includes works from Unisson, Cojoc, Moldovan, Cirkel Square, Techu, Constratti, Distilled Noise, Vern, Vlad Bretan and Santucci, among others.
Side A opens with the title track “Homebase”, an uplifting composition designed for the dancefloor and powered by punchy drums, spiralling acidic basslines, enveloping pads, carefully placed breakdowns and intermittent vocal samples that help build tension. Following, “Reflections” switches gears and delivers a chilled sound where broken beats and dubby atmospheres merge into an immersive journey, perfect for introspective moments.
On Side B “Somewhere In Ibiza” lays out a pulsating rhythm where the bassline weaves in and out with filter sweeps and resonant modulation while subtle electro stabs add extra drive to the whole. Closing, “Signals” takes the tempo down a bit, offering a rather melancholic sound flavoured with reverberating chords and echoing vocals.
