feeder sound exclusive premiere: Pheek – Demure EP (w. Mihai Popoviciu remix) [Aissa Records]

Montreal-based label Aissa Records presents its 3rd vinyl release in the form of “Demure EP” signed by Canadian electronic music icon Pheek alongside acclaimed Romanian DJ and producer Mihai Popoviciu on remix duties.

Founded and curated by Darem Aissa, the imprint functions as a boutique vinyl sub-label of Suleiman Records, both paying homage to contemporary Syrian poet Suleiman Al-Aissa. The first release was dropped by Dubfound in 2018 while the 2nd arrived in 2021 with Pauli at the controls, so it’s nice to see Pheek joining the catalogue, considering that so far he’s been responsible for the mastering services for the other materials. As usual, the artwork is provided by MID Studio.

A native of Montreal, Jean-Patrice Rémillard aka Pheek is internationally known for his career as a live electronic musician, his label Archipel and his audio engineering services. Since the early ’90s, he explored a subtle amalgam of microhouse, minimal techno, dub and ambient, without ever completely falling into one style or the other. With several tours around the world and countless releases and collaborations under his belt, it’s easy to say that his sound has reached a certain maturity and that he’s at the top of his art.

“Goldfish Memory is a track tailored for set openers as a tool to create tension and be layered with techno music. It was meant to be hypnotic and groovy at the same time.” – Pheek

Fueled by pulsating tubular bells, twisted background effects and grainy percussive patterns, “Goldfish Memory” has a specific progression envisioned as its experimental groove delivers a hypnotic rhythm that constantly builds tension. The cut elegantly complements the other two originals and the remix, providing a different approach to the EP’s intricate minimal sound.

Opening the 12″, “Maybe It Was A Dream” unfolds an uplifting sonic voyage into deep minimal techno, flavoured with ambient and IDM elements, perfect for afternoon sessions or deep listening moments. Mihai Popoviciu‘s reinterpretation perfectly complements the original, laying out a different perspective that keeps true to the tempo and narrative while adding subtle yet essential dubby nuances to the whole journey. Closing, “Yeah” drops a sluggish stripped-down groove designed for the dancefloor, making this record a must-have for collectors, selectors and electronic music enthusiasts alike.
