Zapped Records continues as the accompanying label to the Berlin party series with its fourth release, ‘Madonna’, which comes courtesy of a:side, including remixes from Phill Prince and Phil2. 

The concept of Zapped was incepted through a collective of artists sharing a studio space in Marzahn, far East Berlin, at Frank Zappa Strasse, inspiring the name; the crew have since gone on to develop a beloved party series and launch Zapped Records. The imprint marks its fourth release here from a:side, a producer for the likes of Movida, Groovebox, Front Recordings, and now Zapped, operating in the realms of groovy house and microhouse music. 

The original mix of title-cut ‘Madonna’ leads, an eight-minute excursion through twinkling synth chimes, a fluttering lead line, and ethereal textures billowing atop a shuffled, low-slung rhythm section.

The second original, ‘Cruise Control,’ follows and leans into a more stripped-back territory, bringing a raw percussive edge to the forefront while twitchy oscillating synth hits, vocal chants, and airy atmospherics ebb and flow throughout. 

On the flip side, Milan’s Phill Prince reworks’ ‘Cruise Control’, stamping his distinctive twist on the original via murky dub swells, a bouncy bass line, crisp drums and intricate processing of fragments from the original composition. Siegen, Germany’s Phil2, then concludes the release with his twist on the title track ‘Madonna’, embracing the core essence of the original and reshaping it into some more loop-driven, subtly unfolding and even nuanced across its seven-minute duration.
