Andrei Ciubuc – Gotta Have House EP [Malonian]
The 10th release coming from the German imprint Malonian sees Romanian DJ and producer Andrei Ciubuc returning to the label with four dancefloor-oriented cuts that deliver an avant-garde mix of house and minimal, carefully selected and packed into Gotta Have House EP. The artist has been there since the beginning, signing a remix for Sedee (co-founders Sebastian Werle & David Nicolas) on the first catalogue number (Ian EP) and returning in 2018 alongside Frost on 2 Sides Of The Spatel EP. This time, his solo works highlight this 12″ and enjoy heavy rotation in sets from Ricardo Villalobos, Zip, Margaret Dygas, Sonja Moonear, Raresh, Rhadoo, Petre Inspirescu, Dan Andrei, Fumiya Tanaka and Barac.
Inspired by the unique vibes of Sunwaves Festival, Malonian stands out to its foundations and always delivers genuine vinyl-only delights from carefully-picked artists, just like this one right here announced to arrive in major record stores worldwide in early October.
Side A opens with the title track, “Gotta Have House”, setting the atmosphere of the EP with style, enveloping us with its warm and groovy sounds from the very first seconds to the last. The dynamic drumming patterns, jazzy chords, overlapped vocal layers and multiple breaks create a laid-back yet soulful feeling. Following, “4 Of A Kind” spirals deep into an old-school and funky house for its core elements while making enough room for polished insertions and arrangements to stand out in the frequency spectrum.
On the flipside “Gonna Work It Out” further explores uplifting house music flavours designed with chugging drums, low-slung basslines and perfectly placed vocal cuts for an extra drive while the closing track “Boba” steps into the realm of experimental minimal, dropping a pulsating abstract rhythm with a twist.
