Tomohiro Yano & Yuji Kobayashi – Sazae EP [Beat In Me]
The second vinyl instalment to arrive from the Japanese record label Beat In Me showcases the steaming minimal sounds of Tomohiro Yano and Yuji Kobayashi in the form of “Sazae EP”. Well-known for bringing some of the most cutting-edge Romanian DJs to his eponymous event series in Tokyo, Raha keeps pushing the boundaries with Beat In Me, exploring forward-thinking rhythms and grooves well rooted in minimal techno and microhouse.
Featuring two original tracks and a collaborative composition from both artists, the record perfectly displays their raw talent and individual styles. Drawing inspiration from the Romanian techno style and with a distinctly Japanese sensibility added to the groove, the 12″ surely delivers hypnotic sound affairs perfect for the dancefloor.
On Side A we first find Tomohiro Yano’s “Bw 002”, a low-slung groover designed with shuffling drumming patterns, eerie background textures and a solid bassline that keeps everything together as the relentless drive of the track slowly fades into Yuji Kobayashi’s “Mirror Ripples”. Here we’re introduced to a stripped-down sound where warm pads, sharp effects and subtle dubby chords create a mesmerising atmosphere.
On the flipside the title track “Sazae” drops a melancholic vibe and a chilled sound as the beat keeps this journey trapped in a sustained rotation best-fitted for the afterhours or laid-back afternoon sessions. A highly recommended release right here for collectors and selectors alike.
