This Friday we travel to the USA to find out more about Kev Obrien’s new alias Vek Neirbo and warm up for the upcoming weekend with a special DJ set for our ongoing podcast series.

Vek Neirbo is the unruly, backwards-thinking alter ego of long-time US-based DJ and producer Kev Obrien. Under this new moniker, he explores hypnotic underground minimalist vibes inspired by the Romanian minimal sound, while also leaning toward bouncy, tripped-out tech and microhouse.

Throughout time he travelled from the US to Europe, Central America and South Africa, but in recent years he’s taken a hiatus in order to focus on managing several underground record labels, such as Detroit’s Moteur Ville Musique (releasing works from Delano Smith, Mike Shannon, Jay Tripwire, J Gabriel, The Mole and Diego Krause), Vibe Me To The Moon and Eyedyllic Music. More recently, Kev took on a label management role with the London-based label, Superlux Records, home to artists such as N-Gynn, Voigtmann, Subb-An, Dawl and Robert James, to name a few.

Obrien and his former production and label partner Chris Luzz (together known as Manhattan Projject) reached a pinnacle in 2012/2013, as the duo built one of the quickest-rising labels in recent years, receiving major acclaim from DJ Mag, Mixmag, Resident Advisor and delivering anthems that dominated radio charts across Europe for quite some time. Everyone from Sven Vath, Solomun, Sasha to Soul Clap were regular supporters of the unbound diversity of sound and genre-defying music that the two artists curated on Stranjjur during its brief twenty-release span.

“For this mix, I channelled fuzzy memories of spending many long weekends in Brooklyn at underground afters events such as ReSolute and Blk-Market. The set moves from funky to dark and driving minimal, eventually lightening up with some fun house music toward the middle and some weird and wonky vibes toward the end. My favourite moment is when Alexander Skancke’s track “What Happened” comes in, with the great vocal “What happens in New York… Stays in New York“… which is absolutely true! Big love from my new home in Denver, USA!”
