exclusive premiere: Oscar Jones – Chi [Leftback]
Leftback Records announces the next instalment in their Leftback Intercities digital series to arrive soon with Leeds-based artist Oscar Jones at the controls alongside Micallef on remix duties. Titled “Foundations EP”, LBIC012 delivers five steaming minimal cuts designed with the imprint’s distinctive sound, adding extra spice to the 2020-born digital venture which includes titles from label head Dudley Strangeways, Cosmic Clap, Empat, Mortalyf, Matt Star, Annie Errez and Illan Nicciani, among others.
Drawing influence from a wide range of minimal-oriented genres, Oscar Jones is widely known for his intense activity in the UK underground scene and beyond, having collaborated with promoters and labels like Dirty Hands Records, Tupikor Music, The Lab, LW Recordings, Blow The Roof Records and Mind Hub. Recently, he also introduced the world to his most recent project Marv which he created alongside Pük and had their first performance this weekend at the Distrikt Club in Leeds.
“Foundations EP was written as a love letter to my trusty Tanzbar, a truly wonderful and unique sounding drum machine used as the foundation for each track. I always aim to blend a mixture of organic and electronic sounds in my music and I love the way the Tanzbar brings these worlds together. Each track is written to bring a different flavour while drawing from my love of microhouse and ambient music, allowing warm chords and moving textures to become the focus of the breakdown sections, providing a contrast to the crisp and snappy sounds of the Tanzbar.”Oscar Jones
“Chi” opens the EP with a laid-back vibe powered by broken beats, glitchy patterns and eerie textures that incorporate subtle jazzy chords and mysterious vocal samples that set up the tone of the whole journey with style.
The other tracks are equally engaging, with “Planck’s Trip” and “Foundation” delivering a shaking low-slung and bass-laden sound perfect for simply-lighted dancefloors while the closing cut “Just A Moment” dives deep into deep house and microhouse arrangements, best fitted for the afterhours. Micallef completes the release with a stripped-down and darker version of “Planck’s Trip”, making this EP a must-have for collectors and selectors alike.
