Komponente, Kurilo – James Webb [Trance Pandemic]

The 4th pressing coming from the Ukrainian record label Trance Pandemic sees label heads Komponente and Kurilo return with an amazing EP entitled “James Webb”, paying tribute to the freshly launched space telescope whose mission is to unravel the mysteries of the universe. Founded in 2020 in Kharkiv, now a city on the frontier of the Russian/Ukrainian war, the label represents the ongoing collaboration between the two artists and aims to prove that the spirit of music survives even in difficult times. They also participated with the track titled “Beautiful Baby” on the 2nd volume of our “Peace in Ukraine” Various Artists series.

Viacheslav Hura aka Komponente started out as a pianist in 1995 and got into electronic music in 2006. His extended activity includes running projects and labels like KIM, Tvir and Kultura Zvuka, as well as collaborations with imprints like Fach Label, Rednetic Recordings, Body Parts, Biatch Corp Recordings, Uzvar and Spaziotempo.

Yevhenii Kurylo or simply Kurilo has been playing percussion instruments since he was 12 years old and worked on a hip-hop project when he was young. Throughout time, his passion for electronic music grew more and more so he started collecting vinyl and DJing at various local parties while dispatching his own works with Parallel Universe, Blindtone, Mung Records, Tvir and, of course, Trance Pandemic alongside Komponente. Recently he launched his new vinyl label Etat.

Side A opens with the warm sounds of “Millennium 2000”, an uplifting composition flavoured with acid and trance influences. The rolling groove is smoothly complemented by twisted effects, colourful pads, engaging arrangements and spaced-out vocal samples that add extra depth to the whole journey. Following, the title track “James Webb” takes the tempo down a notch, diving deep into minimal and breaks. A prominent and wobbling acidic bassline rumbles through the frequencies while the background textures remain bright and spacious.

On Side B we first find “Sonic.exe”, a techno-trance hybrid cut, perfect for well-heated dancefloors. Here, the looping synths and chords interlace with electric insertions and eerie atmospheres creating a hypnotic effect. Taking the energy even further, “Avec” closes the record with a twisted amalgamation of styles, moods and edits that can only spark anyone’s imagination while wearing their dancing shoes. A highly recommended 12″ right here!
