Duc In Altum – Firewall to Saturn EP [Serialism Records]
The 12th instalment in Serialism Records‘ DX series arrives in the form of “Firewall to Saturn EP” signed by the Duc In Altum duo, who delivers three original cuts (one in collaboration with Ian R.) and two remixes by Serbian sound master Marko Nastic and the imprint’s Berlin A&R and resident Luca Albano aka Weg. The material adds even more magic to the label’s extended catalogue which features both vinyl and digital gems focused on modern house and techno music delivered by artists like Nazt, Jichael Mackson, Javier Carballo, Loquace, Matheiu, Monika Ross, Frank Haag, Jin Choi, Frank Storm, Cristi Cons & Sublee, Reclame, Dubphone, Vlad Arapasu, Red Pig Flower, Cali Lanauze, Andre Buljat and, of course, label-head Cesare Vs Disorder, among many others. The artwork is signed by Fernanda Mattos.
Eric Frizzo Jonsson (Brasil) and Arjana Vrhovac Jonsson (Serbia) aka Duc In Altum have been active on Sao Paulo’s underground scene since 2013, organising steaming parties and playing at renowned venues in the city (Madame Sata, Trackers, Aloca, Mono, Garage, Lions, Clash). Nowadays, they frequently perform at the worldwide famous club D-Edge while constantly working on new productions. The duo’s sound is a voyage between dub techno, minimal techno and microhouse, with a lot of surprises in between. Among the labels that published their works we find Future Scope Recordings, CMOK Label, Cabana Music, Rhizome, Not For Us and Ginga Music. Duc In Altum means reaching for the higher and infinite, always striving for better and more… and this without a doubt is a hidden message behind their music.
The EP opens with the bubbling, funky vibe of “Haux Cacique” featuring Ian R., a swinging minimal cut powered by hypnotic sounds, twisted effects and alluring atmospheres. The title track “Firewall to Saturn” follows with a deeper mood designed with warm synth melodies, melancholic textures and a steady-paced rhythm that goes through engaging variations along with the notes. Marko Nastic‘s remix transforms the original into an abstract downtempo ride focused on distorted elements, heavily modulated vocals and off-beat percussive insertions. Coming up next, “Snooker Dog” explores a sonorous dimension of tech-house that constantly progresses into a spiralling sound of electric chords while Weg‘s reinterpretation takes the original into the realm of minimal, dropping a dreamy theme carefully crafted with dub influences. A highly recommended release right here!
