After dispatching two solid EPs from Chrivu and Maifaunu, Macarie‘s underground venture Midas Touch returns with its third vinyl-only instalment with local artist Sonohat at the controls alongside Vid on remix duties. Titled “Last Bottle Of Wine EP”, the wax drops a dark and driving minimal sound carefully crafted with mysterious melodies and twisted effects, perfect for dimly lighted dancefloors. Based in Bucharest, Sonohat has been performing at numerous events, sharing the decks with the likes of Tight Cherry, Arapu, Robert Apetrei, Hostox and Marcu Rares while some of his productions have been published by Cedesciu Wax, Alter Hour, Revolt and Kontent, aside from his independent uploads on Bandcamp. His distinct style explores minimalistic sound dimensions which combine elaborate synth work with intricate drumming patterns, alluring complementary sequences and twisted background textures. This EP makes no exception!

Side A opens with “Nohemian Rhapsody” setting the tone of the whole journey with swinging distorted chords and a whipping baseline to which numerous microlayers are added in order to create a hypnotic effect. The overall atmosphere remains dim, yet the energy of the rhythm powers an eerie and entrancing progression. Following, Vid‘s re-interpretation reveals a chugging stripped-down composition where some the original elements transform into haunting, indiscernible whispers and the tempo goes up a notch.

On the B side, “Another Bottle of Wine” slurs ghostly vocals and dark drones to tell a textured story where the kick continues relentlessly. The industrial flavours of this piece slow the pace at around 123 BPM while resonating in a nebulous soundscape. “Chains” switches gears and closes the record on an uplifting note, where ever-evolving background movements elegantly blend with a groovy bassline and a nostalgic, yearning melody that reminds us how even the ability to turn everything to gold could, ultimately, be a curse.
