Direkt – Binary Variable EP [Soper Univers]

After several years dedicated to organizing events for modern electronic music lovers and enthusiasts, French venture Soper Univers takes a step forward and presents their first vinyl-only release in the form of “Binary Variable EP” signed by Romanian artist Andrei Popa aka Direkt alongside Russian producer Swoy on remix duties. The label is well-known for its extensive activity in the scene since its first events in Lille, as well as for its podcast series where you can find amazing sets from Matje, Metafore, Prajescu, Olivier Romero, Trik and Bassam, among others.

Direkt had a busy year, with releases published by Abduction, Atipic, Thinc and Micro Orbit Records, aside from his independent works dropped on Bandcamp. Another fresh EP has been announced to arrive soon on Subtil Records. His distinct take on minimal, house and techno brought him massive support from a lot of established DJs as we heard his tracks in several selections across the internet. This EP makes no exception so expect top-quality minimal music.

Side A opens with “Averted Vision”, a wobbling stripped-back composition that has an uncanny electric feeling subtly embedded in its layers. The bouncy bassline and raw percussive core lead a rolling rhythm which also incorporates heavy modulated vocal cuts and numerous micropatterns. Following, “Binary” introduces a more progressive sound flavoured with bright atmospheres and spacious breakdowns. Here, the narrative includes a carefully crafted funky swing which is emphasised from time to time through the arrangements.

On Side B we first find Swoy‘s reinterpretation of A1. A more bouncy setting is felt from the first seconds and the track evolves into a complex story designed with long and breezy pads, vast background textures and a driving drumming pattern. Closing the material there’s “Variable”, a twisting and turning piece where a darker mood and a slower tempo leave enough room for solid sub-bass to flow through the frequencies while glitches and bleeps add a special kind of spice to the whole.
