Various Artists – Edition 2 [Bread And Butter Recordings]

Bread And Butter Recordings returns with its second pressing after almost two years since its inception and its first release back in 2018. Titled “Edition 2”, this Various Artists compilation arrives in a limited number of copies and packs four tracks delivered by UK-based artist Rowlanz and local DJ and producers Direkt, Sublee and Vern. The label is a project conceived by Max Frisina, co-founder and resident DJ at the Bread & Butter event series in London for more than a decade. From straight energetic rhythms to more laid-back arrangements, the wax provides a solid journey into the realms of modern minimal music, making it a must-have for selectors and collectors alike.

Side A opens with “Colours” by Rowlanz, an engaging piece designed with warm melodic layers, evolving textures and solid percussive patterns. The subtle progressive nature of the synths and the spacious breakdowns will make anyone slowly drift from the world around into a colourful sound dimension. Following, there’s “Bye Apollo” by Direkt, a thumping minimalistic composition that focuses on its drumming variations and dubby bassline. The rotating effects and harmonic stabs are always on the move, constantly building tension and delivering energy.

On the flipside we first find “Simpa” by Sublee, a deeper cut built with reverberating chords, bright background pads and a steady-paced rhythm. The track twists and turns as new elements are introduced with the skipping hats, spiralling into a truly hypnotic journey. Closing the record there’s “Kairos” by Vern bringing a more relaxed feeling to the table. Here, a mellow continuous bassline will keep you moving while wind pipes, chimes and delayed strings can be heard throughout, creating moments of peace from time to time.
