feeder sound exclusive premiere: Pheek & Kike Mayor – No Chance (DoubtingThomas Remix) [ubiyu]

The American imprint ubiyu returns with its second pressing, an amazing four-tracker which features two original cuts by Canadian artist Pheek and LA-based Kike Mayor, as well as two remixes delivered by DoubtingThomas and Chad Andrew in collaboration with Just_Me. Titled “No Chance EP”, the wax is announced to arrive on the 14th of August but until then we can all enjoy a very special remix of the title track provided by DoubtingThomas in support of UBU002.

The head of Archipel, Jean-Patrice Rémillard aka Pheek has been around since the ’90s, slowly building a name for himself in Québec and Montreal in the early years, only to become a key figure in the international electronic music movement through hard work and dedication, which constantly provided him with more knowledge and evolving skills. With a rich discography, numerous collaborations and his activity as a sound engineer backing up his extended experience, for this material Pheek joins forces with Kike Mayor, a Los Angeles-based artist that started his career ten years ago in Lima, Peru, where he was born. Now, he runs the Outré platform alongside his wife Amanda and Saint & Don’t Music with He Did, where you can find top-notch 12” by the likes of Jessica Diaz, Dubsons, Felipe Valenzuela and Denis Kaznacheev.

With releases on key underground labels like Little Helpers, Magnetic Records, Catch Recordings, Eastenderz, Mayak, Rewire Musik and Gaazol as well as with prestigious residencies under his belt, DoubtingThomas makes a very delightful appearance on this material, dropping a steaming dubby sound.

“This remix is very special as we love DoubtingThomas’ sound since he started years ago. We are in love with this remix!” – Kike Mayor

The track kicks in with a solid uplifting drumming pattern and a prominent bassline, to which various additional elements, swirling effects and heavy modulated vocal cuts are added in order to create a stunning musical journey. The dub-infused drum rolls create a thundering vibration while the breakdowns unleash several new layers that will keep your attention to the background textures in perfect balance with the rhythm.

On the vinyl, you’ll find a slightly different edit titled “Dub Side of the Mood”, which takes the original into a spiralling re-interpretation, being designed with melodic pads, warm textures and hypnotic reverberations.

The original “No Chance” rolls with crunchy percussion, an eerie mood and alluring guiding vocals, constantly building on itself through its intricate arrangements while “11” delivers a more funky flow, built with quirky percussive elements and rich background movements. Chad Andrew and Just_Me close the wax with their retrospective take on “11”, raising the tempo and bringing spacious and vibrant breaks to the table.
