Unisson – Nazare EP [UNS Records]

The third record to arrive through Alex Draghici and Teodorescu Nicolae’s UNS Records sees the duo bringing forward two fresh tracks while Nu Zau and Direkt work their magic on the title track, providing two outstanding re-interpretations. Long-awaited, “Nazare EP” surely delivers, packing a solid minimal sound that has that distinct flavour we’re well accustomed to, thus making Unisson a highly appreciated local project.

Unisson are well-known in the scene, with their previous two vinyl-only releases, “Dreamer9D” and “Roboost EP” enjoying support from artists like Petre Inspirescu, Arapu and Sepp, while other works have been made available in digital format on Bandcamp and have been heard in many selections around the world. Their approach on modern electronic music incorporates microhouse, breaks or minimal techno rhythms, carefully balanced by melodic background textures, intricate layering and amazing dynamics. Let’s dive in their latest material and explore each track in more detail while properly adjusting the volume of the speakers.

Side A opens with the title track “Nazare”, a strong minimalistic piece designed with a pulsating bassline in focus, uplifting drumming sequences and quirky glitched effects. The spacious breakdowns bring all the layers into a spinning carousel of reverberations while the overall energy is preserved at all times. Following, “Leacul Lebedelor” reveals a more steady-paced rhythm, built with prominent synth patterns, numerous microsounds and perfectly balanced tension-building moments. The percussion offers a proper punch as well, remaining a guiding core element throughout the whole journey.

On the flipside we first find Nu Zau‘s remix, a stripped-down wobbling cut that takes the original into a completely different perspective. With the drumming adjusted to a slightly slower tempo and new dubby ingredients added, the track rolls into a hypnotic dimension, perfect for dimly-lighted dancefloors. Closing the wax, Direkt goes for a more funky approach, unleashing a swinging minimal groove that sweeps through the frequencies with style. The intricate textures created by the bleeps and glitches are the main driving sounds here, providing a smoothly polished background for the beat to go by with. Enjoy the ride!
