Michel Degen – Sanguina 002 [Sanguina Records]
Basel-based DJ and producer Michel Degen returns to the Black Series brought forward by his Sanguina Records imprint with a second pressing, delivering three original cuts and a remix signed by local artist Herck. The wax arrives next month in a limited number of copies and drops a groovy minimal sound which adds even more spice to a catalogue in which you can also find works from the likes of Kepler, Prajescu, Mikhu and Fictiv among several pressings which remain untitled and uncredited.
Michel Degen developed a passion for music at an early age and had his first gig when he was only 18 at the famous Nordstern Club in his hometown. Since that moment he started to dedicate most of his time to mixing, production and organising events. Aside from his own playground, some of his works have been published by Samani Music, Hattrick Records, Studio 405 and Innocent Music. For this ride he invites Herck to work his magic on one of the tracks, adding his distinct fingerprint sound to the whole journey. Adjust the volume of your speakers and let’s explore the material in more detail.
All the tracks are carefully crafted with minimalistic yet catchy arrangements, from the playfully melodic rhythm infused with warm pads and swinging effects of the opening track, “Kingdom Castle”, to the more driving sequences of “Master Slave” and the quirky, hypnotic rotation of “Outer Space”. Herck‘s take on the lastly mentioned adds a more thumping vibe and a darker feeling while keeping to the spacious layering of the breakdowns and the dynamics of the original. With the overall drumming patterns going micro and tension-building moments revealing surprising variations, the tracks can serve as great DJ tools for both peak-time moments and the afterhours at any kind of party. An amazing record for selectors and enthusiasts alike!
