Adrian Niculae, Dinu – ATIPIC010 [Atipic]

It’s really nice to see that artists keep announcing new music to drop on wax during these hard times we are all facing nowadays. The next vinyl-only instalment from the renowned local label Atipic is scheduled to arrive at the end of May and hopefully by then the lockdown here in Romania will come to an end.

After a long time, we see Adrian Niculae aka Priku returning to his most daring and ongoing affair, Atipic, a label that surely passed the test of time by keeping a constant flow of releases since its creation back in 2016. For the tenth pressing in the catalogue he teams up with Dinu, with whom he recently collaborated on the track “Luna” for the Introspections vinyl series curated by Half Is Enough and proven his solid skills with the keyboards as a part of the Atipic Live project. His strong love for electronic sounds and the piano can be seen in his compositions as well as in the role he plays alongside Adrian on stage, where he delivers deep and colourful arrangements to complement the rhythms. With the recent performances at the Supermarket in Zurich and club Rex in Paris being widely acclaimed, we’ll see more coming from the two in the future for sure, so stay tuned.

The material reveals three tracks designed with uplifting vibes which sublimely combine the modern aspects of minimal electronic music with playful and engaging soundscapes. From the relentless energy of the first track to the more progressive feeling delivered by the second and the driving force of the third, the EP showcases a groovy balance throughout while standing as a solid argument for the endless possibilities that can arise when skilled music-makers explore the world of analogue sounds. The piano adds a warm overlay to the cuts either the harmonies are raw, modulated, transposed or filtered, while the distinct and elegant drumming blends perfectly with the organic nature of the arrangements.

ATIPIC010 definitely counts as a great addition to any record collection as well as to the imprint’s discography, which includes names like VincentIulian, Andu Simion, Jorge Savoretti, Vlad Arapasu, Alexis Cabrera, Romar and Bogdan Ardeleanu aka Ardb. The offshoot AtipicLab series is just as enjoyable, so we highly recommend checking it out as well.
