Filipp – Miletus EP [Geodesic]

After recently dispatching “Stuffz EP” on his and Paul Popa’s imprint Swiftness, local artist Filipp returns with yet another amazing material, this time released through Geodesic, a new venture brought forward by Ardb or Bogdan Ardeleanu by his real name, who also signed the first record of the freshly founded label. Titled “Miletus EP”, the 12” packs four otherworldly tracks that explore a radiant dimension of electronic sounds inspired by the importance of natural elements like water, fire or air as thought and studied by the ancient civilisation of Miletus, one of the greatest cities inhabited by the Ionian Greek tribes, located on the western coast of Anatolia and considered to be the birthplace of Greek philosophical and scientific traditions.

The collaboration between Filipp and Bogdan spans for many years, as the two DJs and producers are widely known for their live project Kosmogonik. This EP manages to capture that specific warm and raw analogue feeling present in the duo’s performances, yet it delivers a personal approach, different and equally enjoyable. Let’s dive in and take a look at the tracks in more detail.

Filipp - Miletus EP [Geodesic] 2

Side A opens with “Thales”, a resonant composition designed with breakbeat influences, spacious pads and wobbling effects. Named after one of the Seven Sages of Greece renowned for their wisdom, the cut flows at a steady pace, taking the listener on a perfectly polished journey into a complex universe of sounds. Following, “Arsinoe” goes deeper, revealing mellow synth patterns, a solid oscillating bassline and jungle-flavoured build-up moments that are properly modulated and filtered to obtain an old-school atmosphere.

On the flipside we first find “Primordial C”, a rather melancholic cut characterised by prominent melodic notes, spacious background textures and numerous variations. Here, the layering always seems to bring new elements in and out of focus, juggling with ethereal sensations and introspective states of mind alike. The wax closes with the title track “Miletus”, a more uplifting piece infused with reverberating chords, a strong bassline and house-oriented percussion. Evoking the long-lost splendour of the ancient Greek city, the rhythm offers dynamism and escapism at the same time. A must-have for any collector or selector right here!
